What's New on the iPhone 18 Pro

The variable-aperture camera is the headline. The 18 Pro's 48MP main camera can physically change its aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 using six laser-cut blades. Wide open, it gathers more light than the 17 Pro's fixed f/1.78 lens for cleaner night shots. Stopped down, it produces real optical depth of field and sharper landscapes without the software-blur look. Apple also added manual Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, and an opt-in "Apple Reference Image" mode that produces an unalterable original.

A20 Pro on 2 nanometers. Apple claims a 40% faster GPU and double the AI compute of the A19 Pro, plus 50% more memory bandwidth. In daily use the 17 Pro was never slow, so the practical benefit is in sustained workloads: gaming, 4K video export, and the on-device Siri and Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27. A vapor chamber with three times the surface area is what lets the 18 Pro hold peak performance longer.

Battery and charging. Apple rates the 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and the 18 Pro Max at up to 45 hours, both a few hours ahead of the 17 Pro models. Fast charging hits 50% in about 15 minutes on the Pro, and Apple says five minutes on the Pro Max buys around seven hours of playback.

Smaller Dynamic Island. Noticeable, not transformative. It can now show three Live Activities instead of two.

Apple's own modem. The C2 modem brings mmWave 5G to Apple silicon for the first time, with faster uploads and, Apple says, 15% lower energy use. US models are eSIM-only.

What's the Same

The body. The 18 Pro and 17 Pro are dimensionally identical, down to the button and port placement. Display sizes are unchanged at 6.3 and 6.9 inches. The full-width camera plateau, Camera Control, and Action button all carry over. The enclosure is still aluminum. The practical consequence is that your iPhone 17 Pro case will most likely fit, which we've covered in detail.

The Weight and Price Went Up

Same size, more phone: the 18 Pro is 7.44 oz versus 7.19 oz, and the 18 Pro Max is 8.78 oz versus 8.22 oz, making it the heaviest iPhone Apple has shipped. And both models cost $100 more than the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max did at launch, at $1,199 and $1,299 for 256GB.

Should You Upgrade From the iPhone 17 Pro?

Probably not, unless you shoot a lot of photos. The 17 Pro is one year old, gets iOS 27 and the new Siri features, and its camera is still excellent. The variable aperture is the one upgrade a 17 Pro owner will feel every day, and if that's your thing, go for it. For everyone else, the 18 Pro is a $1,200 purchase for a faster chip you won't notice and a smaller notch. Wait a year.

Should You Upgrade From the iPhone 16 Pro or Older?

Yes. From a 16 Pro you get two generations of chip, the variable-aperture camera, materially better battery life, and Camera Control. From a 15 Pro or older, you also get the move to the newer body design and USB-C speeds. If you're on a 14 Pro or older, this is an easy call, and Apple Trade In is currently offering $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or newer, with carriers advertising up to $1,200.

Should You Buy the iPhone 17 Now or Wait for the iPhone 18?

If you mean the standard iPhone 18, it isn't coming this fall. Apple has split the lineup, and the base iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are expected in spring 2027. If you want a non-Pro iPhone today, the iPhone 17 is the phone to buy, and it will be current for six more months. If you want a Pro, there's nothing to wait for: the 18 Pro is shipping now, and the 17 Pro is still worth buying at a discount if you don't care about the camera upgrade.
