Will Your iPhone 17 Case Fit the iPhone 18 Pro? Yes, With Three Caveats

Updated September 16, 2026. Before Apple's announcement, this article said a 17 case would not fit, based on supply-chain reports of a thicker body. Those reports were wrong. Here's what Apple actually shipped.

Short answer: the iPhone 18 Pro is the exact same size as the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the exact same size as the 17 Pro Max. Not close. Identical, to the hundredth of a millimeter. Most iPhone 17 Pro cases will physically fit an iPhone 18 Pro. There are three things that can still go wrong, and one thing an old case can't give you.

The Dimensions, Side by Side

The button layout is unchanged too: Action button, volume buttons, side button, Camera Control, USB-C port and the full-width camera plateau are all in the same places. That's why OtterBox and most other case brands are now selling one case labeled for both the 18 Pro and the 17 Pro.

Caveat 1: Apple Isn't Guaranteeing It

Apple lists its own iPhone 18 Pro cases as compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro only. It sells separate SKUs and has not published a statement certifying that 17 Pro accessories work on the 18 Pro. Everyone in the accessory industry has measured the phones and concluded they're the same, but if you want an official guarantee, there isn't one. The same applies to any case brand's warranty: most say nothing about using a case on a phone it wasn't sold for.

Caveat 2: Precision Cutouts Can Still Bind

The outer dimensions match. What Apple doesn't publish is the exact height of the camera lenses or the precise coordinates of the buttons. A plain silicone, leather or hard-shell case with an open camera window will line up. The cases to double-check before reusing are the ones with:

• Tight individual camera rings that hug each lens, rather than one open cutout around the plateau.
• Built-in lens protectors glued to the case.
• Precision button covers, especially over Camera Control, where a fraction of a millimeter changes how the touch surface responds.

If a case fits everywhere except the camera area, don't force it. Pressure on the lens housing is exactly the failure mode you bought a case to prevent.

Caveat 3: The Phone Got Heavier

The 18 Pro is about 3.5% heavier than the 17 Pro, and the 18 Pro Max is nearly 7% heavier, at 8.78 oz. Same case, more mass, more energy in every drop. A case that was borderline on a 17 Pro Max is more borderline on an 18 Pro Max. This isn't a reason to throw out a good rugged case, but it is a reason not to trust a thin case that was already at its limit.

What About Screen Protectors?

The glass footprint is the same, so a full-coverage iPhone 17 Pro screen protector should line up on an 18 Pro. The one visible difference is the Dynamic Island, which is smaller on the 18 Pro. A protector with an island cutout sized for the 17 Pro will show a slightly oversized cutout. Protectors without a cutout, which is most of them, aren't affected.
